WORKHORSE CUSTOM CHASSIS

WORKHORSE CUSTOM CHASSIS

Triz Engineering develops a new RV chassis for Workhorse.

Workhorse Custom Chassis contracted Triz Engineering to develop a new chassis for their 24,000lb GVW Class A recreational vehicle product. This was to be the first custom designed chassis for Workhorse, thus an experienced engineering partner was essential to meet the specifications and timelines for the project.

Founded in 1998, Workhorse manufactures step van and recreational vehicle chassis. After only four years in the recreational vehicle market, Workhorse surpassed the 50% market share threshold for class 3 through 6 vehicles, before eventually taking over 65% share of that same market.

Class A recreational vehicles are considered to be the extreme of luxury in the motorhome industry, and the chassis themselves need to be robust enough to accommodate all of the weight concealed within the packaging of these lavish amenities.

Equally as important are the ride and handling aspects. With luxury motorhomes, the drivers and passengers want to enjoy their driving experience. Triz Engineering thus needed to balance reliability and comfort with the design of the frame and the integration of the suspension and powertrain.

For this project, we began with a feasibility study to help Workhorse understand the costs, our development approach and the possible outcomes. This ensured that Workhorse knew exactly what kind of chassis could be manufactured and how best we could design it.

To meet the Workhorse requirements for the new chassis, we specified and integrated the following major components:

  • Engine: GM Vortec 8.1L V8, 340 hp
  • Transmission: Allison automatic 6 speed with overdrive
  • Brakes: Hydraulic anti-lock Quadraulic4-channel, 4-sensor ABS system
  • Suspension: Single stage constant rate parabolic with aux. Like-Air™ spring, gas-charged shocks and rear track bar.

The outcome of the project was a new W24 recreational vehicle chassis that exceeded expectations and opened new market applications for Workhorse. The chassis was pre-engineered with three different wheel bases (208, 228, 242 inches) to maximize market opportunities by meeting customers’ need for customization. Furthermore, its best-in-class 30,000lb GCWR capacity allows the user to tow up to three tons, which enables them to easily bring along a truck, van, or boat.

ELGIN SWEEPER

Triz Engineering helps Elgin Sweeper meet EPA Regulations while improving serviceability.

Driven by changes in EPA regulations, Elgin Sweeper Company, an Illinois-based OEM for street sweeper trucks, contracted Triz Engineering to replace the then-current Tier 3 emissions engine of their Pelican sweeper truck with the latest EPA approved, John Deere Power Tech EWX 4.5L, 74 horse power Tier 4 engine.

ELGIN SWEEPER

Triz Engineering helps Elgin Sweeper meet EPA Regulations while improving serviceability.

Driven by changes in EPA regulations, Elgin Sweeper Company, an Illinois-based OEM for street sweeper trucks, contracted Triz Engineering to replace the then-current Tier 3 emissions engine of their Pelican sweeper truck with the latest EPA approved, John Deere Power Tech EWX 4.5L, 74 horse power Tier 4 engine.

The Pelican is a unique three-wheeled mechanical sweeper vehicle known for its maneuverability and serviceability. Elgin’s street sweepers improve water and air quality and community health, and prevent water pollution. Since 1914, they have been committed to creating the toughest and most rugged sweepers in the market.

Elgin Sweeper chose to contract the project to Triz because of our ability to focus exclusively on the custom engine installation required for the project. By calling in a dedicated external team, Elgin Sweeper avoided shifting their own valuable engineering resources away from their core responsibilities; it would have been disruptive and risky for Elgin Sweeper to ramp up internal resources just for this custom project.

Triz was responsible for the entire project from start to end, including feasibility studies, engine installation design, finite element analysis, detailed drawings, engineering release and prototype vehicle build support. To enable this level of support, Triz provided on-site project engineers to serve as liaisons between the Elgin Sweeper and Triz teams.

John Deere signed off on the installation and Elgin Sweeper passed all tests with comfortable margins. The project further improved the reliability and serviceability of the truck, while reducing costs by sharing components with other Elgin trucks.

The outcome of the project was a success as it finished on time and on budget. Pete DiBenedetto, Engineering Manager at Elgin Sweeper, commented that, “The involvement Triz Engineering Services had in regard to Elgin Sweeper’s Pelican 74hp EWX project was excellent. The on-site engineer was very thorough, professional and engaged in the production of the prototype unit, as well as responsive to any changes that may have been required. Overall, it was a great experience.”

AUTOCAR

Triz Engineering develops a new heavy duty chassis for Autocar.

Autocar contracted Triz Engineering to develop a new super-heavy chassis, specifically designed for concrete pump trucks and loop belt units. The company needed a chassis that could accommodate a 50m – 60m pump and loop belt units, converting their current 8x4 HD straight rail chassis into 12x6 and increasing the gross vehicle rating from 86,000lb to 126,000lb.

Autocar contracted Triz Engineering to develop a new super-heavy chassis, specifically designed for concrete pump trucks and loop belt units. The company needed a chassis that could accommodate a 50m – 60m pump and loop belt units, converting their current 8x4 HD straight rail chassis into 12x6 and increasing the gross vehicle rating from 86,000lb to 126,000lb.

Autocar is a proudly American-owned company, headquartered in Hagerstown, Indiana. It is the only American truck manufacturer focused on trucks for severe-duty vocational applications. Above all, Autocar is focused on its clients, using their “Always Up” promise to highlight their focus on their customers’ unique needs.

Autocar’s trucks help their customers to be more successful and achieve their challenging objectives. As the industry's technology and innovation leader, Autocar has delivered more natural gas vehicles than all of their competitors combined. Autocar is the oldest motor vehicle manufacturer in the United States and built America's first truck in 1899.

For this project, we began with a feasibility study to help the customer understand the costs, our development approach and the possible outcomes. This ensured that Autocar knew exactly what kind of chassis could be manufactured and how best we could design it.

To build the new chassis, we designed and integrated a:

  • Tridem rear drive design;
  • New front suspension;
  • Tri-steer axle conversion;
  • New brake system;
  • Electrical system updates (ABS and rear axle differential lock harness); and
  • Optimized Allison transmission 6th gear shift point.

The outcome of the project was a new 12x6 Autocar ACX cab chassis, the largest Autocar product offering, which opened new market applications for Autocar speciality vehicles. Additionally, the Tridem rear drive design offers three different axle spreads and six wheel bases.
